Els H. Swaab was admitted to the bar in 1976, after which she focused on the property practice. From 1992 to 1995 she was Dean of the Amsterdam Bar Association and from 1995 to 2002 she was managing partner at Boekel De Nerée.
Her practice now focuses on arbitration (she is registered as an arbitrator with the Netherlands Arbitration Institute) and mediation (certified mediator with the Netherlands Mediation Institute), either as one of the parties’ attorney or in her capacity as an arbitrator or mediator.
The arbitration and mediation cases that she handles are in the fields of property and project development as well as in the field of disputes within partnerships of professionals.
Els Swaab is a member (and Secretary) of the Supervisory Board of De Nederlandsche Bank N.V. and of the Supervisory Board of Schouten en Nelissen. She furthermore holds the following positions in a legal and/or administrative field: Chairwoman of the Council for Culture, Chairwoman of the Complaints and Disputes Committees of the NIVRE (registered experts) and the NICAM (Classification of Audiovisual Media), the Netherlands Mediation Institute Foundation (NMI), the Democracy and Media Foundation (with PCM as the majority shareholder) and Common Purpose Nederland.
